To say that Zack and Thomas Eller are pet lovers is an understatement. The two young Milton residents, ages 13 and 10, have dedicated countless hours on behalf of local animal shelters, raising more than $7,000 for pet rescue efforts.

The boys are so dedicated to their cause, they ask for pet food in lieu of birthday gifts. They established “Woof ‘Em Down Dog Biscuits” an organization that makes and sells dog biscuits at various city events, and donate all the proceeds to pet rescue organizations. And they participate in a variety of local events in their quest to raise funds on behalf of homeless animals.

On October 6, the Milton City Council recognized Zach and Thomas for their efforts, declaring it “Zach and Thomas Eller Adopt-a-Shelter Pet Day” in the city.

“The citizens and youth of Milton are one of the shining examples of what makes Milton so special,” Council member Julie Zahner Bailey said. “I am proud to bring forward this evening a proclamation honoring two very special young Milton residents, Zach and Thomas Eller, to acknowledge them for their exemplary volunteer efforts regarding the safety, rescue and welfare of animals.”

Having their hometown name of a day in their honor is just the latest in a string of recognitions the duo have collected. They also received the President’s Volunteer Service Award in 2006 and 2007 for their efforts on behalf of homeless animals and were chosen by the Disney Worldwide Outreach program as a winner of the Wondertime’s Littlest Volunteer Contest, earning the boys a $5,000 grant for their chosen charity.

There are between six and eight million homeless pets currently in shelters across the country and the Eller boys are making a difference. October is National Adopt-A-Shelter Dog Month so get involved this month and help a pet in need.
