Dear Friends,
Neighbors and Milton Citizens,
September is a busy time for us at City Hall and there is much productive
work occurring on your behalf and I am proud to be a part of it. The
2008 budget has been finalized, capital projects identified, the new
ladder fire truck has arrived and is in use protecting Milton, the
Comprehensive Land Use Update process has begun and the Milton
Round-up is just around the corner. We also have a Town Hall
informational meeting tonight regarding tax bills and this
Saturday, September 22 we have a Student Driving Course
conducted by our Public Safety Department to benefit our community's
youth. And, on September 25th, the Board of Education is
hosting a meeting at Summit Hill Elementary regarding the new
elementary school planned for Birmingham Highway and Wood Road.
These are just a few things happening around your Milton.
I hope you have your calendar marked for the first annual Milton
Birthday Party which will take place on Saturday, September 29th from
3:00 - 8:00 p.m. It is going to be a wonderful family centric
event with music, barrel racing, a kids zone, a dunk tank, face
painting, food and more. It will be a great way to celebrate
our community, our youth and our future together. The event is
being sponsored all most entirely by local businesses with a goal of
providing a family fun event at virtually no cost to the city.
Lots of volunteers have done a wonderful job planning for this
terrific community gathering.
It has been a real pleasure to work on this event with Council member
Tina D'Aversa, Linda Blow of our city staff, co-chairs Burt Hewitt
and Travis Allen along with other dedicated volunteers including Jack
and Rachelle Berube, Phyllis Davis, Tim Enloe, Jan Fowler, Troy
Hutchinson, Sandy Jones, Patricia Shimmel, Kevin White and Kathy
Woerner. Everyone has worked very hard to ensure this is a fitting
and fun day to celebrate Milton. Please be sure to join us.
Please plan to attend tonights Town Hall meeting, Wednesday,
September 19th at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall. The goal of the
town hall meeting will be to provide a helpful forum to explain the
billing process, the tax assessments which are the responsibility of
Fulton County and to provide time for questions and answers from city
staff. Please use this link to read the letter from
Mayor Lockwood on the topic of tax bills.

Sept 13 City
Council Work Session Wrap-up
|
|
During our most recent Mayor and Council Work Session, I
presented the Milton "Green Community" initiative which
encompasses many programs and opportunities that will help to further
distinguish our community and leverage the mission statement and values
of our city and its citizens.
"Green Communities" provide opportunities for enhanced
building standards that are a win for businesses, development and
citizens as the standards incorporate environmentally friendly
approaches that can be very cost effective and drive property values
higher. Other elements of my Milton Green Community concept is to
create a "Milton Recycles" focus along with enhanced
opportunities for the preservation of Greenspace and open space, storm
water enhancements that contribute to improved water quality,
environmental education opportunities leveraging our partnerships with
local schools and businesses and so much more.
Please view the summary document I presented to the Mayor and
Council. And, please note that Sept. 22 provides an opportunity
for our community to recycle electronics via Waste Management one day
electronics recycling day at the Alpharetta transfer station.
Stay tuned for more information on this important initiative.
Mayor and council also had discussions surrounding a proposed
telecommunications ordinance (cell towers) and suggested language
changes for the Highway 9 Overlay. The Highway 9 Overlay needs
some more specific architectural standards and buffer requirements and
these initial language changes will be a first step towards ensuring
the language reflects the desires of citizens to see Highway 9 enhanced
with more specific design guidelines. I am a strong supporter of
enhancements to the Highway 9 Overlay and will continue to support and
sponsor enhancements to this area of our Milton community.
Documents reviewed during our work session can be found using the
following link.
