Milton News from Julie Zahner Bailey

Dear Milton Citizens, Friends and Neighbors:

This is an exciting time of year.  Congratulations go out to students and teachers who have completed another successful school year of learning.  We owe many thanks to the teachers who dedicate their time and talents to the youth of our community.  And a special congratulations to seniors who have achieved another milestone as many of them now transition to college.

This is also a time of year that many of us pause and give thanks to the men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedoms we all enjoy in the United States of America.  Milton's Memorial Day event was held on Monday, May 26th at City Hall in honor of those who have dedicated their lives so that we may all experience the freedoms of the United States of America.  It was a fitting tribute to the men, women and families that have made the ultimate sacrifice.  Crosses with flags bearing the names of fallen soldiers line Deerfield Parkway in recognition of these men and women.

Let us all be sure to keep the memory of those who have served this country in our hearts and minds throughout the entire year and not just on Memorial Day.   Please be sure to stop and thank those who serve this county currently.  We live in an amazing country and the men and women that protect our freedoms and provide us security deserve our daily gratitude.

Meanwhile, the Comprehensive Land Use Planning process continues and your involvement and direct participation remains crucial.  Last night was the first of two sessions, if you missed last nights session you can still attend tomorrow, Saturday May 31st two community visioning sessions will be held.  Please mark your calendars and plan to attend and actively participate as this is one more way that you can have a direct and lasting impact on what our community looks like and feels like for years to come.  It matters.  Scroll down for more details

Similarly, this release outlines upcoming public meetings whereby your involvement and participation are important.  Public participation in all that goes on in Milton has never been more important.  Please be sure to review agendas and items forthcoming so you can plan to attend the public meetings and provide comments.  Your elected officials need to hear from you to ensure we make decisions based on your values and expectations for our collective community.

For those travelling on family vacations, please be safe and have a wonderful experience with your families wherever you may go.

I hope you find this information helpful.  I endeavor everyday to represent your interests with professionalism, knowledge and a sincere dedication to this very special place we all call home.  I consider it an honor and a privilege to represent you and take my role on your behalf very seriously.  Thank you for placing your trust in me.

Alll my best,

Community Visioning Sessions

If you missed last nights meeting your opinions still matter, attend tomorrow 9am at Summit Hill Elementary.

Please plan to attend these important community visioning sessions.
They are one way that you can personally weigh in on the future of Milton and what it will feel like and look like in the years to come.  The purpose of the Community Participation Program (CPP) element of the Milton's Comprehensive Plan is to ensure that the local plan reflects the full range of community values and desires through the involvement of a diverse group of stakeholders and citizens.

The "Visioning" Workshops will be held at Summit Hill Elementary at the following days and times:

  • Saturday, May 31st from 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Please see the agenda for these meetings by using this link

(Note:  Both meetings will follow the same agenda.  You can attend one or both, but attending at least one is very important to the future of Milton.  If you care about the future of this place we all call home please plan to attend and participate in these visioning sessions).

This is a chance for you to convey very directly whether you want the area to remain rural, low-density and predominantly residential or if you prefer the area to grow through commercial expansion and whether you want to continue to see the community uphold the no-sewer policies or not.

Almost 3,000 of you returned the community surveys. Thank you! This was an important part of the Comprehensive Land Use Planning process, too.  Preliminary results of the survey as provided by the consultant, BRPH, indicated at the May 14th community meeting that the majority (well over 70%) of those who responded wanted to maintain the no-sewer policies and the lower density way of life provided within the City of Milton.

As you might imagine, however, there are those who want to question those independent results and still want to claim that sewer will not bring higher density. With that in mind, these community visioning sessions are yet another way to ensure your opinions and desires are heard yet again.

The primary "visioning" meeting will be city-wide in scope to facilitate a more meaningful visioning process and will be organized around the theme of "Preserve, Change, Create, or Connect."
The planning process will follow three steps:

1. Identify what the community wants to preserve, change, create, or connect.
2. Establish a collaborative vision.
3. Outline two or three alternative scenarios for future development.

Thank you in advance for your commitment to your community.  Your voice, your opinions and your involvement make all the difference!

Update on Sewer Plant in NE Cherokee
EPD Postpones Decision Based on Citizen Input

Citizen input from Cherokee County residents and those in Milton were heard.  Letters of citizens expressing their concern with the proposed sewerage treatment plant expansion made a difference with the EPD.

Many of you may have already received the letter from Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division (EPD) confirming the latest news - based on the comments they received, they have decided to postpone their decision until the Total Maximum Daily Load Study (TMDL) has been completed.

By Milton and Cherokee residents and communities working together, the EPD has recognized that there is more research and more evaluation needed regarding the NE Cherokee Sewer Plant.

Stay tuned for more details as they become available.
