Update on Road Conditions & Updated Meeting Schedule
|
Dear Milton Citizens, Friends and Neighbors -
I hope you are enjoying the light cover of snow in Milton today. It is beautiful, but please be safe. This email is intended to provide you a quick update on:
- Weather and road conditions as reported from City Hall including certain road closures as of 1 p.m..
- Certain meeting dates -- some of which have been rescheduled such as the CZIM-- and others recently scheduled that I hope you will consider attending including the January 19th Transportation Charette.
- An invitation to participate a positive community wide program next week sponsored by Northwestern Middle School entitled Rachel's Challenge. This program is designed to foster peace in our local schools and community while also building life long values of respect and character for our youth and their families. Please come and participate and help to create a "chain reaction" of positive acts of kindness amongst all ages and community members. This exciting program kicks off next week on Thursday, January 14th at 7:00 p.m. at Northwestern Middle School located on Birmingham Highway. The entire community is invited to attend and participate. Please scroll down for details.
First and foremost, the City of Milton has been hard at work trying to address dangerous road conditions due to freezing weather. While it is warming up, the City advises citizens to stay home and off the local roadways if at all possible. Here is the latest regarding road conditions as of 1 p.m.:
CLOSED ** New Providence Road from Dorris Road to Atlanta National Golf Club ** Cogburn Road from Bethany Road to Francis Road ** All of Redd Road POOR DRIVING CONDITIONS
** Bethany Bend Road at Cogburn Road ** Providence Road at New Providence Road ** Hopewell Road at Brookshade Parkway ** Multiple stretches of Birmingham Highway (Ga. 372) and Birmingham Road ACCIDENT
** Hickory Flat Road: An overturned vehicle with entrapment Matt Marietta, Milton's emergency management coordinator, advises the city's roads crews are treating roads to make them safe for driving. Marietta said city crews are working with the Georgia Department of Transportation to create safe driving conditions on Birmingham Highway (Ga. 372).
Due to weather conditions, meetings scheduled for last night at City Hall were canceled. Rescheduled meeting dates -- including the Community information Meeting regarding the three proposed cell towers-- was rescheduled to next week on Wednesday, Jan. 13th at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall.
Please see the right margin of this release for those rescheduled as well as other meetings of importance including the upcoming January 19th Transportation Charette meeting at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall which will seek citizens input regarding transportation solutions and options for the northern region including Milton.

Rachel's Challenge comes to Northwestern Middle School
January 14th 7 p.m.
|
Northwestern Middle School in Milton, Georgia is pleased to announce their promotion and implementation of Rachel's Challenge, a program intended to foster peace in our local schools and community while also building life long values of respect and character for our youth and their families.
Rachael Scott was the first person to be killed in the horrible tragedy at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. She was known for kindness and compassion. Her writings, personal life examples, and stories have touched many lives around the world. Rachel Joy Scott wrote, "I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindness can go".
This innovative school program has changed the lives of youth and created positive "chain reactions" of acts of kindness while also preventing numerous suicides, drastically reduced bullying, and in several known instances, prevented a planned school shooting. Thanks to the leadership of Northwestern Middle School-including administration, teachers, staff, the PTA and generous grants-local students and families now will have the opportunity to participate in this life-changing, student focused program intended to further enhance our local environment and framework of positive thinking and actions.
Rachel's Challenge will premier at Northwestern Middle School on Thursday, January 14th, 2010 with two assemblies during the school day for NWMS students and a community focused program the same evening at 7:00 p.m. All members of the community are encouraged to attend the evening program.
Principal Bruce Fraser notes, "Northwestern Middle School is excited about the opportunity to kick-off Rachel's Challenge in our local school and the broader community as one more way of creating a foundation of positive thinking and positive acting community members of all ages. After all our youth is the future of our community."
Your participation and involvement in the Rachel's Challenge program might be just what is needed to "start a chain reaction".

Special Use Permits for Cell Towers & Crabapple Rezoning
|
Special Use Permits for three cell towers requested by T-Mobile on three separate locations including: a) 14495 Hopewell Road, 2) 2880 Mountain Road, and, 3) 13302 New Providence Road. These special use permits will follow the required rezoning/special use permit process with a:
- Community Zoning Information meeting on Wednesday January 13th at 7:00 p.m.,
- Planning Commission meeting on Tuesday January 26th at 7:00 p.m. and,
- City Council meeting on Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at 6:00 p.m.
RZ09-05 - Rezoning request in Crabapple on Birmingham Highway (372 - just south of Crabapple Elementary School on the east side) - The applicant is requesting to change the current conditional zoning -- which is a conditional C-1 use specifically identified for an antique store -- to an unconditional C-1 use. The letter of intent of the applicant notes that the initial new use contemplated is for a hair salon. It is very important to note, however, that an unconditional C-1 zoning would allow other uses to be brought forth in the future if the zoning were to become unconditional. The current conditional use means that while it is C-1, it can only be used for the specific conditional use identified. This comes to the City Council for a vote on Wednesday, January 20.

ARC: Milton citizens needed Jan. 19 - Transportation Charette
|
MILTON, GA., Jan. 5, 2010 - The Atlanta Regional Commission is asking all Milton citizens and business owners to take part in a North Fulton Comprehensive Transportation Plan interactive meeting Jan. 19 at 6 p.m. at Milton City Hall, 13000 Deerfield Parkway, Suite 107E Milton, GA 30004.
The meeting, known as a charette, will last approximately two hours. Citizens are encouraged to bring their ideas about Milton's transportation needs in the context of the North Fulton region. The purpose of the North Fulton Comprehensive Transportation Plan is to provide the foundation and framework for multi-modal, multi-jurisdictional infrastructure and policy recommendations across the cities of Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Milton, Sandy Springs, Roswell and Mountain Park.
The resulting document, TRIP (Transportation Resources Implementation Program), will guide the accomplishment of this effort. Input from the public and stakeholders will be sought throughout the project schedule.
A key outcome of the program is to identify and reconfirm community visions and priorities. Roadway, transit, bicycle, pedestrian, safety and operational improvements, demand management, freight movement, environmental, land use and market analysis are critical study components.
This event is sponsored by the Atlanta Regional Commission and the City of Milton.
For further information, contact the Project Manager, Ed Ellis, at 404-419-8700.

It's easy and very appreciated.
Support in many forms is essential for my grass roots efforts and of course, includes the need for financial contributions.
Thank you for your consideration of such a donation.
